Topic: Embedded Reinforcement dimension

Hi,

In ATENA GiD, you have to put a dimension of embedded reinforcement. What is the dimension of this embedded reinforcement and how this dimension affects the analysis? I have done some trial analysis with different dimensions and the results vary significantly with the dimension.

In modeling the bond of reinforcement, what does it mean by confined and uncofined concrete? In theory manual, it says..unconfined (failure by splitting of the concrete) and confined (failure by shearing of concrete between the ribs). If I am modelling a beam with shear reinforcement and ribbed bar, will it be counted as confined or unconfined?

If the mesh size is 50 mm and estimated crack spacing is 100mm, then will it make any difference by using the "activate crack spacing" function?

Thanks.

Re: Embedded Reinforcement dimension

Dear Faisal Mahmood,
1. it is not clear from your question if by "embedded reinforcement" you mean smeared reinforcement, or discrete 1-D bars?
For smeared reinforcement, please see ATENA Troubleshooting, 2.2.6 How do I calculate the reinforcement ratio when defining smeared reinforcement?
For 1-D bars, please see the ATENA-GiD User's Manual, 5.3.51D Reinforcement Material.

2. For basic information on confinement, please see Troubleshooting, 2.2.7 How to include confinement in the analysis? (note that section concentrates on volume material; to consider confinement influence on bond for 1-D bars, use the corresponding bond properties).

3. I suppose you may be also interested in Troubleshooting, 2.2.11How can I take reinforcement bond into account?

4. No - please see ATENA Theory, 2.2.8 Crack Spacing.

Regards.

Re: Embedded Reinforcement dimension

Hi dpryl,

Thanks for your reply.

1. I mean 1-D bar and Fig. 5-64 of ATENA-GiD User's Manual "Embedded reinforcement- Minimum ____ m". The manual doesn't say anything about this dimension. My question was how to select this dimension and how this dimension affects the analysis?

Thanks.

Re: Embedded Reinforcement dimension

Dear Faisal Mahmood,  please see the pop-up help for the item or/and ATENA Input File Format Manual, 3.13.4.7 CCDiscreteReinforcementME MACRO_ELEM_DATA_SPEC data.

For embedded bars, a value like 1/10 of the element size in concrete can be recommended.

Regards.
